Do you wish you could pull the plug on work some days?

For so many of us, work-life balance is an elusive fantasy. Honestly, we all know that the work never ends.
  • You can’t just shut it off.
  • ​You are expected to respond to emails, texts and calls 24/7. Oh yes, you have maybe been told you don't need to be available. However, you know the truth: It's an unwritten expectation that you are ALWAYS available!

And the truth is, it’s not likely to change any time soon!  
  • There will never be enough hours in a day  
  • Your ToDo list will never get completed
  • The amount of work you have or the amount of time you have to do it in isn’t going to change.
Being unable to shut off has left you ​overworked, overwhelmed, overburdened and plum tuckered out!
UGH ...Survival Mode!

What you really want it to be able to just shut it off at the end of the day.  
   √  You want to be able to “Let go” of everything that is going on in your mind
   √  The next thing you have to do
   √  Your overwhelming To Do list
   √  You crave time for you: exercise, read, visit, sleep or just putter around.
   √  You want more time to spend quality time with your family and friends.
   √  And oh man...could you just imagine getting a good nights sleep?
You want to be able to leave work at the end of the day without feeling guilty √ √ √

​Perhaps you fear that:
  • If you turn off your phone, a crisis will hit, and you won't be there to fix it, manage it or be the one who notifies the big boss, media or clients.
  • If you shut your door to get work done, you will be judged as unavailable, standoffish or unapproachable.
  • If you put your health, sanity and family first, you will be seen as selfish, lazy or not committed to the organization.  

So you stay late, work overtime and catch up in the evening.
Just as soon as you cross one thing off your list, two more show up.
​And you my dear, keep getting more tired, frustrated and out of balance!

I know that path all too well!
​I've struggled with getting it all done at work, but not getting it all done at home. Or vice-versa.
If I took time off to deal with family issues, my health or even a vacation, I came back to an overflowing inbox, messes to fix and a drained supervisor who was covering for me. 

I tried a lot of time management techniques to help me get work done so I could find time for my family and me:
  • Steven Covey's 4 Quadrant's of Execution - A critical component of what I use to stay focused on what matters now. But it was not the be all and end all
  • The Pomodoro Technique -An incredibly valuable tool that I continue to use, however, this didn't magically make me more balance.
  • David Allen's Getting Things Done Method - Amazing stuff that is vital for me now, yet something was still missing.

What I realized was that it wasn't a "technique" that was going to change things for me. I wouldn't just wondrously find time to focus on the other side of the balance scales. 

I learned it was about more than just time management
I discovered there were several components to work-life balance that needed to be incorporated to truly find that place of balancing. 

Now, it's time for you to incorporate those components as well!
When you take a holistic approach to work-life balance,
​you will find that more often you are balancing both!

Leaders who find they are more often in balance see the work-life balance scales differently. Rather than focusing on the two pans, work on one side or life on the other, they see the whole scale and focus on all parts.

Work-life balance is not a destination, it's an ongoing series of actions, beliefs and perspectives. That's what you are going to learn how to do!
