3 Steps to reaching your goals

Many of us want something but lack the discipline to actually get it. We wish for more money, a nicer boss, and less stress. We may desire a more fit body or a better marriage. But what are you consciously, doing to get it.

Achieving goals takes intentional work. Here are 3 steps that will get you on the right track to meeting your goals.

1. Write them down?
It is only a dream if it isn't written down.  Your goals must be documented. Include specifics, timelines, and measurements.
  • I want to loose weight isn't a goal.
  • I will loose 10 lbs by October 31 is a much more effective goal.

2. Get clear on why the goal is important
What difference does it make if you loose weight? Get more organized? Complete that course?
WHY?
Now that you've documented your goals, also record why that  goal is important. This will help you to not loose sight of why you are working on your goal, especially when the going gets tough. Our why helps connect us and ground us to our goal. Our why is often about how we want to feel when we reach the goal.
  • One client I was coaching wanted to be certified in her area of expertise. Why though? Completing it is one thing. The raise she would get was another. It was, however, the feeling of confidence that most motivated her.
  • I have a goal to increase the number of subscribers to my email. My why is because I will be using my full potential to reach more people who really need more peace and balance between their leadership and their life. The goal isn’t solely about me. I have a responsibility to grow other leaders and support them to also feel connected to their lives. That’s my job. It’s a commitment that I don’t take lightly. By connecting my marketing work to real people, it expands the connection and has the work be more meaningful for me.
3. Have a system in place to review your goals regularly

This is one of the most crucial parts of goal setting. You need a system to come back to regularly reviewing goals, at a minimum, weekly. Think about why system you might use. You might have a page in your journal or an app on your phone with your goals listed. That is only part of it. What is the routine that you will put in place to look at that every day? Build a habit around looking at your goals regularly.

Bonus - Add some regular questions that you ask yourself
In addition to your goals, have some regular questions you ask yourself. Part of figuring life out is self-reflection. We spend a lot of time trying to achieve things, which is important. However, before we know what we want to achieve, we have to get clear on what is important, why it’s important and what we might want to do about it.

By adding a few key questions to your weekly review, you will be making space for conscious and intentional self-reflection.

You might ask yourself:
  • What are my triggers?
  • What sets me off in meetings?
  • When do I resort to emotional eating?
  • What are the times things I say yes to when I wish I’d said no.

Simply by writing the answers to these questions regularly throughout the year, you will have some powerful insights. They may well inform your goals
