Confidence is what you believe you can do, not what others think you are capable of. Far too often, it's not others that doubt our abilities. Instead, it's what we tell ourselves, that make us doubt our own abilities. That is where Imposter Syndrome can kick in, and you don't want that!
In this episode, you will learn 4 strategies to help boost your confidence.
  • Know you can - is all about competent leadership which we learned about in Episode # 7 - Competent Leadership: 2 questions to ask yourself
  • Believe you can - is all about managing your mindset to help you remove doubt and replace it with confidence.
  • Act like you can - is all about taking courageous steps, which we learned about in Episode # 8 - Courageous leadership begins with vulnerability
  • Stand like you can - is all about using your body posture to release the chemicals in your body that help you feel confident!

Tune in to learn more!

Successful leaders have high levels of self-confidence.
We've all seen certain leaders walk into the room, and you can tell that they are confident, self-assured, composed and have got it all together.
But they did not walk into their leadership role, feeling that confident.
They did not get into that level of courage by hanging out in their comfort zone.
That leader was first brave.

  • They took risks.
  • They stepped outside their comfort zone again and again and again and did things that were uncomfortable, awkward, and yes, even scary.
The more times they push themselves outside of their comfort zone, their comfort zones grew.
As they stretched out of their comfort zone, they progressively became more confident, bit by bit by bit.

But that is because they were courageous first.

The challenge is, too many leaders wait to feel confident before they do things.

In this episode, you'll learn why courage first is essential, and some strategies for how to grow your leadership courage muscle.

Do you ever feel inept in your leadership role?
For example, are you afraid that you might look stupid or stumble over your words at a meeting?
However:
  • Have you ever taken training to speak in public?
  • Have you ever had the opportunity to practice speaking in public? Not to actually talk publicly, but practice public speaking with the opportunity to get feedback and grow and develop your skills?
If no, then it's no wonder you feel incompetent at times.

Competent leadership is about:
  • Having skills
  • Having had the opportunity to learn to use those skills.

In the nonprofit world, however, two problems impact your level of competence as a leader.
  • First, nonprofit leaders often move up the ranks from frontline positions without the accompanying training to go with the advancing role. We move you up from frontline, to the supervisor, to the manager to the coordinator to the director. However, you've never taken the actual training to go with that.
  • The second problem is when you do get some training you think you have to know immediately and be able to apply it immediately. When you don't, you take that training, and you still are not entirely competent at it, you beat yourself up.

And that's where we feel inept.
That's where imposter syndrome comes in.
That's when we start to doubt ourselves, hold ourselves back, limit ourselves and keep ourselves playing small.

Competence is about learning a skill and then practicing a skill.

Two QuestionsIn this episode, we will dig deep into the following two questions to help you consider how you can increase your leadership competence.
  1. Have I taken any training on this subject?
By training, I mean a course someone taught you at work, you know, mentored you, you read a book, you attended a webinar, maybe you watched a YouTube video, or you listen to a podcast, whatever, doesn't matter. But have I taken any amount of training on this subject?
  2. Have I had the opportunity to practice the skill?

The areas of leadership competence we talk about are:
  • Organizational development
  • How to build a team
  • Proposal writing
  • Reading financial reports
  • Creating team meetings agendas
  • Conflict resolution
  • How to deal with your emotions at work
  • How to give an effective performance review?
  • Effective delegation
  • How to apply the company mission statement in your day to day work
  • How to lead with integrity
